Abstract

As the world population is expected to increase by 38% in 2050, the increase in food production must be made urgently to feed the world. Fortunately, the enormous efforts have been devoted to study the entire DNA sequences of whole genomes from legume species with the aim to identify genes and their function. In Asia, legumes are grown widely for human consumption including soybean, peanut, chickpea, pigeonpea, mungbean, and adzuki bean. As legumes play an important role, providing high quality protein, starch, oil, and minerals, several essential Asian legume plants have been sequenced from 2010 up until now as it follows: soybean (Schmutz et al., 2010), pigeon pea (Varshney et al., 2012), chickpea (Varshney et al., 2013), mungbean (Kang et al., 2014), adzuki bean (Kang et al., 2015), peanut (Chen et al. 2016, Bertioli et al. 2016). The current available sequence data will be a significant step toward crop improvement and agricultural productivity, which, in turn, will assist agriculture production, productivity and sustainability in Asia and the world. This workshop will cover various research topics of several legumes.
