Abstract

The results of a two year investigation on tidal pool fish community structure in the Eastern Cape are presented in terms of species composition, seasonal abundance and size frequency distribution. Fifty species were collected during the study period and these can be broadly grouped into three categories, namely, resident species, transient species and intermittent species. Size frequency distributions indicate seasonal recruitment of juveniles into pools and highlight the role of tidal pools as nursery areas for some marine fish species. The study has also established the absence of juveniles of some important rock angling species from tidal pools.
