Abstract
In this welcome keynote presentation Professor Sugata Mitra explains the fascinating background to his world-famous “hole in the wall” experiment, where a group of slum children in India were given access to a computer and learned to use it without any adult help.
Sugata’s groundbreaking ongoing research has demonstrated that children can achieve many objectives of schooling on their own. Turning the time-honoured concept of schooling on its head, he has shown that children can attain levels of achievement close to traditional schooling with the help of a friendly, but not knowledgeable, mediator.
This is a tremendously important concept for isolated communities, where the quality of traditional primary education often declines with ‘remoteness’.
Introducing Self Organised Learning Environments and Remote Presence Technologies, Sugata foresees a future of education that may be very different from what we have today.
