Abstract
The process of galvanization of steel has been considered at several Maths-in-Industry study groups to try to identify the reason for flaws in the coating. The steel is heated to a high temperature and then passed through a bath of alloy to coat the sheet, after which it is drawn upward to allow draining under gravity and stripping using a high speed jet of air. In this article we discuss the basic aspects of the problem and in particular the gravity draining component for different shaped objects. A method to compute the coating thickness for an object of any shape under pure gravitational draining is given.
