Abstract
"Copper deficiency in pastures, crops and animals has caused widespread financial losses in Western Australia (Bennetts, Harley and Evans 1942; Toms 1958; Burvill 1965; Gilbey, Greathead, and Gartrell 1970) and elsewhere (see Underwood 1962; Reuther and Labanauskas 1966). In plants, marginal copper deficiency can markedly reduce the yield and quality of fruit or grain, while severe deficiency also reduces vegetative yields. Low Cu levels in pasture impair the health of grazing animals and the carrying capacity of the pasture through two effects. Firstly, the amount of Cu taken in with the pasture may be inadequate for the healthy growth and development of grazing animals (Beck 1941; Bennetts et al. 1941). Secondly, the botanical composition and the yield of a pasture may decline, since Cu deficiency reduces the seed yields and persistence of valuable pasture species, e.g. subterranean clover, in mixed swards (e.g. see Riceman 1948; Carter and Day 1977)..."
