Abstract
Whether one dismisses the "ludic" theorisation of embodiment as a form of middle-class anti-rationalism (Teresa Ebert, 1996) or heralds a thinking-through- the-body as the oppositional imagination's most revolutionary innovation (Rosi Braidotti, 1991), one cannot simply ignore the body. From medievalism to cultural studies the body has become theory's new fetish object. Often described as the repressed matter of abstract speculation, the number of journals, conferences and books dedicated to the body indicate that the repressed has returned with remarkable force. Given that an interdisciplinary theorisation of the body has assumed centre stage within the humanities it is perhaps appropriate that questions are now asked of this new inside, this new centring of knowledge on and about the body…
