Abstract
In a world where most tertiary learning occurs in large lecture theatres, the potential benefits of authentic learning experiences have never been more apparent. The tertiary education sector is under constant pressure through growth of programs and restrictions in funding. At the same time, rapid changes in technology are having a profound impact on the world. This research seeks to explore the potential of tablet computers as one example of recent technological innovation to support authentic learning experiences of students. Three learning frameworks were specifically used to inform the development of the study: authentic learning, cognitive tools, and mobile learning. A design-based research approach was used to conduct the study, including the development and refinement of a set of design principles for mobile authentic learning. These principles were initially developed drawing on practitioner feedback and relevant literature. They were then used to re-imagine an existing course in the business information systems discipline. This course was implemented in a total of three iterations with students, comprising a calibration iteration, and two research iterations. At the end of each iteration a selection of students was interviewed using semistructured interview techniques. These data were used along with lecturer observations and artefacts created during the course to evaluate the course design and identify improvements to be made. The findings of the study suggest that when learning is carefully designed to include the use of tablet devices it can be a more authentic experience. Learners generally enjoyed the learning experience and felt it helped improve their learning. The majority of concerns raised by participants about the use of tablets in their learning have been resolved as the technology has evolved in recent years. The main outcome of this study is a set of design principles to guide teachers in the development of mobile authentic learning.
