Abstract
The overall objectives of this project were to characterise the effect of· two known stimuli of the reproductive system on ovarian activity in seasonally anoestrous ewes, and to determine the hormonal patterns that accompany ovarian changes through the transition from seasonal quiescence to follicular activity.
To characterise the ovarian and hormonal changes that occur, measurements were made of: (1) the concentrations of circulating gonadotropins, (2) the concentration of oestradiol from the ovarian venous effluent, ( 3) the recruitment (antrum formation), growth and maturation of ovarian follicles, (4) the steroid production from the induced follicles and (5) the presence of gonadotropin receptors in the granulosa cell layer of the follicles; through this transition...
