Abstract
Sleep loss can impair athlete health, performance, and recovery. In professional rugby, frequent travel and matches often restrict sleep, potentially compromising individual performance and overall team success. While restorative sleep is essential, research in elite sport remains limited. Notable gaps include a lack of real-world data on sleep in athletes and limited field-based tools to assess sleep architecture, which could offer prognostic insight into next-day function. This thesis aimed to address these gaps through a series of studies investigating how in-season stressors; travel and match demands, affect sleep architecture and athletic performance in professional rugby union athletes.
