2003
Abstract
The play is a creative work of post-colonial mapping- in this case, dealing with Perth as a post-colonial concept, as a fringe of the eastern “centre” of the Australian map. The play is informed by a whole body of post-colonial research: including in particular Anderson’s notion of the nation as an “imagined community”; Bhabha’s notion of “narration” as a way a nation is formed; and the notion of place and space in post-colonial cultural geography. It is also informed by the writing of Tim Winton on W.A. as a place of “marginalized” culture and Mudrooroo’s polemical position of Perth as a displaced “second-rate” suburb of Perth.
