Kiss of the spider woman
2006
Abstract
With their new interpretation of Manuel Puigs powerful play Kiss of the Spider Woman Theatre Kwong is weaving another web of intelligent entertainment for Perth theatre audiences.
Manuel Puig's 1980s play, made famous by the Hollywood film version starring William Hurt and Raoul Julia, has now been given a contemporary setting. Relocated in an Asian prison, the play tells the story of Molina, a gay prisoner, who weaves a delicate web of fantasy to relieve the brutal reality of prison life.
His cellmate Valentin, a political prisoner, becomes entangled in this sensual story. Making use of the colourful aesthetics of Chinese Opera, Kiss of the Spider Woman is a piece of visual theatre that uncompromisingly explores the boundaries of desire and power.
