- Venue: Subiaco Arts Centre Studio Dates: 10 – 21 May, 2011 Titus Andronicus involved an exploration of the scope and limitations of directing an all female cast in the traditionally male dominated roles in the play. The rehearsal phase offered opportunities to interrogate the text and the potential of performances that were written for males but which powerful female actors were able, under my direction and with my domestic vision for the interpretation of the script, to realize in performance. I designed the play with a view to surfacing both the surrealism of the violence of the revenge tragedy but also with the intention of illuminating the Absurdist elements that contemporary audiences would respond to. The space was Weimar between the wars and the action was narrated by the original figure of Chorus (a reference I made in devising the production to the film Cabaret) who linked, through tap-dance and percussion, the discrete sections of the play. It was reviewed in the West Australian and online and had a successful 2 week season. Two of the performers were nominated for Guild acting awards in November 2011.
