Abstract

I was invited to curate a documentary photographic exhibition for the International Orange Photography Festival (IOPF) held in Changsha, China. The exhibition, Bangladesh, is the culmination of fieldwork undertaken by 15 of Edith Cowan University’s top photo-media students in collaboration with students from Pathshala South Asian Institute Media Academy. The exhibition consisted of 40 inkjet photographs as well as a slide show depicting 15 short stories examining daily life in Bangladesh with the aim to give voice to the participants of the stories. The works explore the rich diversity of life in Bangladesh, and are drawn from close engagement with the places travelled to and the people encountered: their concerns; their struggles; their daily realities; their hopes; their lives. By curating the show for exhibition at IOPF, the documentary stories were shared among a wide international audience. With a large number of exhibitions and a dedicated series of workshops and portfolio review sessions, the International Orange Photography Festival provided an important platform for both Chinese and international photographers attracted more than 200,000 visitors over the opening week (reported in the Changsha Evening Newspaper, 2010, October 29). The exhibition was also accompanied by a catalogue.
