Abstract

Talhy Stotzer is the sole author of Emulsion, an original creative work exhibited at Collective 2025 curated by the Perth Centre for Photography (PCP). The inkjet print (20 x 20 inches) on hahnemuhle fine art paper continues Talhy’s practice-led research about photographic materiality by exploring its de-materialising capabilities, its relationship to time and space, and its absent-presence. The work contributes to the field of photographic materiality by exploring the intrinsic properties of the photographic medium as a hybrid analogue-digital practice. Emulsion is part of a series that explores photography as both material and immaterial, surface and spirit, document and abstraction. During the tactile process of a Polaroid lift, the image becomes momentarily translucent, extremely fragile and malleable taking on new forms on different surfaces before if it is digitised and recirculated. It is a reminder of the ephemeral nature of both the photograph and what it temporarily captures. The work was selected for exhibition at PS Art Space in Fremantle as part of Collective, curated by PCP. Collective is Western Australia’s largest photographic art event bringing together a diverse array of artistic visions from selected contributors across Australia and beyond and included an online catalogue. The exhibition draws collectors and broad audiences, fostering engagement with contemporary photography within today’s global context.
