Abstract
Talhy Stotzer is the sole author of this original creative work, Ephemeral, a series of nine photographic prints selected for Through the Lens, a group exhibition commemorating the history of ECU Mt Lawley prior to its relocation to the city campus. Presented as a 2m x 1m inkjet print, the work uses Polaroid transfers (an alternative analogue process) to investigate photography’s relationship to materiality and memory, as well as the aesthetics of nostalgia in photographic practice.
This project makes a contribution to the field of photographic materiality by advancing the use of Polaroid transfer as a hybrid analogue–digital methodology which serves as a conceptual framework for examining the instability of memory and the malleability of photography. Through this process, the work critically interrogates how images are physically created, destabilised, and reconstituted, positioning photography not as a fixed record but as a malleable object.
The works were selected by an international panel of acclaimed photographers, including Jerome Jehel (France) and Associate Professor Oh Soon Hwa (Singapore), and the exhibition was curated by Professor of Visual and Cultural Studies Panizza Allmark and Dr Duncan Barnes (ECU, Perth). The exhibition was widely publicised through media channels such as the ABC and included an online catalogue and a people’s choice award to increase engagement.
