Abstract

Talhy Stotzer is the sole author of the series, Hands, an original creative work curated and exhibited by the Perth Centre for Photography (PCP). The inkjet print (16 x 20 inches) was presented as a typology on hahnemuhle fine art paper and was exhibited for the 2024 Collective exhibition. The work critically engages with photography’s historical role in systems of visual classification. The project contributes to contemporary critique about photography’s validity and reliability as an objective record – particularly in the context of our digital era – advancing discourse on photography’s epistemological limits. By situating the camera within its longstanding use across disciplines such as anthropology, medicine, geography, and criminology, Hands contributes to wider debates about the use of photography as evidence. This work builds on Talhy’s ongoing exploration of photography, power, and representation. It was selected for exhibition at PS Art Space in Fremantle as part of Collective, a show featuring local, national, and international photographers. It is one of Perth’s best attended photographic exhibitions and included an online catalogue.
