Murdoch Exhibition for the City of Perth (2023-2025)
01/03/2025
Abstract
Talhy Stotzer is the sole curator of nine student exhibitions for the City of Perth. These shows run daily for two months of the year on the Piazza and Cultural Centre Superscreens, and provide significant exposure beyond the university context.
The curatorial process involves identifying thematic trends that reveal how emerging artists see themselves and others in a specific historical context. Decisions around sequencing, spatial arrangement, and contextual framing (such as captions or exhibition texts), play a critical role in shaping how meaning is produced and interpreted. By positioning the exhibition space as an active site of knowledge production rather than a passive mode of display, this curatorial work extends Talhy’s research into power and representation.
The exhibitions generate insights into visual trends, contemporary concerns, and methodological approaches. For example, landscape imagery often moves beyond idealised notions of nature to address environmental degradation, while strategies of self-representation and performance are used to explore gender identity.By curating these works for the City of Perth, such perspectives are communicated beyond institutional settings, contributing to public discourse and enhancing the cultural value of prominent urban spaces.
The locations where the work is featured for two months of the year attracts 4.3 million visitors annually, offering substantial public visibility beyond the university context or traditional gallery space. The scale and visibility of the work in these high traffic public locations helps to democratize the exhibition space and engage a more diverse audience.
