Abstract

Photography, time, place, identity
Next train to Freo captures the mood and pace of our particular era from the perspective of the Perth Train Station. It is a study of spontaneous interactions and subtle muted rejections in a public space. Taken from a single location, there is a tension in the images between the stillness and permanence of the train station setting and the ephemeral, ever-changing presence of the commuters. As the international festival was held in Fremantle, the series contributed to an artistic representation of the social fabric of the local community. The train station provided a stimulating and engaging site within which to explore the meaning and significance of Perth urban multicultural society. FotoFreo is WA’s largest and most prominent international photography festival. In 2010, the biennial festival hosted the first Australian Magnum Workshop. I received one of 3 scholarships awarded by ARTSWA to partake in the event and develop a new body of work that explored Perth’s multicultural and stratified society. Ten images from the series Next train to Freo>, were shown at the opening of the festival which was attended by 900 people (]Kathryn Doyst, Fremantle Arts Centre Communications Co-ordinator). Subsequently, five images were also printed in a photography book published by the Magnum Workshop.
