Abstract

Stories can be expressed and articulated using semiotic resources such as language, gesture, colour or sound. Such semiotic resources are utilised by the mining companies in partnership with commercial media to create meaning around the importance of mining in and for Australia. Unfortunately many negative effects of mining are underrepresented in those happy narratives. Mining takes place away from view and out of earshot. What we experience as the public is ‘clean’ electricity flowing through the grid and a repeated rhetoric regarding the abundant economic influx for the nation. Sound Resources is a play on power resources, where the solar powered sound installation moves lumps of coal, producing (unattractive?) crashing and sometimes alarming sounds.
