Women’s Work
36th annual conference of the International Visual Sociology Association (Paris-Saclay, France, 25/06/2018–28/06/2018)

Abstract
Talhy Stotzer is the sole author of this photographic series (five photographic prints) selected for exhibition at the University of Evry Paris-Saclay – Paris, France for the 36th IVSA conference. Through the use of on-location portraits, Women’s Work, expands the visibility of women’s engagement in the workforce, beyond domestic roles.
Women’s Work challenges entrenched gender norms and contributes to increasing awareness about economic inequality. Women in Bangladesh still face significant economic challenges: they are less likely than men to participate in the work force (42.5% vs. 81.3%) and earn 35.8% less per hour.* The work encourages greater recognition and advocacy for women’s labour rights.
Women’s Work was selected for international exhibition and contributed to the IVSA conference, themed “Visualizing the Political Process”, by using portraiture to visually investigate some counter-narratives related to gender. The event was attended by academics from across all contents and the exhibition was open to the public. The work continues Talhy’s long-term exploration into photography, power, and representation.
