Abstract

Social media and society Objectification (Social psychology) Social media--Government policy Online social networks--Social aspects
This thesis investigates the interplay of sexual objectification, gender norms, and power dynamics on social media platforms, specifically TikTok and Instagram, focusing on the experiences of female creators interacting with consumers. As these platforms rapidly evolve, they create environments that not only reflect but actively reinforce societal norms that objectify women, compelling creators to prioritise physical appearance and sexual appeal over authentic self-expression. To address this aim, a purposive sample of 231 comments collected from two social media platforms (Instagram and TikTok) were analysed via an inductive-deductive thematic analysis (Clarke & Braun, 2017). The research reveals how platform algorithms are being bypassed by both creators and consumers, with sexualised commentary normalising the view of women as objects, thereby perpetuating cycles of objectification that undermine women's autonomy. The study identifies the dual nature of consumer feedback—where seemingly positive reinforcement often exacerbates harmful stereotypes—and highlights how these dynamics shape women’s self-perception and content creation practices. The findings underscore the urgent need for policy reform, enhanced content moderation strategies, and educational initiatives that promote awareness of the implications of sexual objectification. Future research avenues are suggested, focusing on the lived experiences of creators and the impact of consumer behaviour on youth. The thesis contributes to ongoing discourse around gender dynamics in the digital age, advocating for a more equitable and empowering online environment that challenges patriarchal norms and supports the wellbeing of women creators.
