Determinants of throwing speed in elite male cricketers

Abstract

Background: Throwing speed plays an integral role in cricket, however the correlations to the biomechanics and the strength values of athletes on throwing speed remain poorly understood. Physical performance coaches currently rely on research performed in other overhead throwing sports to improve throwing speed. Methods: 14 elite males from the Western Australia Cricket Association participated in this study. Ground reaction forces and kinematic data were recorded during throwing trials. They were also assessed for strength and power using a range of different measures. Multiple linear regression was performed on both types of throws. Results: Maximum distance throws were found to have a lower speed than maximum speed throws. Stride length, maximum shoulder external rotation, shoulder internal rotation angular velocity at ball release, shoulder internal rotation strength, isometric mid-thigh pull, lateral to medial jump, trunk flexion at ball release, braking ground reaction force and 1-repetition maximum bench press were the predictors across the throwing tasks. Conclusion: Other than 1-repetition maximum bench press, there were differing correlations between the throwing tasks suggesting predictors may be task-dependent. Physical performance coaches should adopt a multi-faceted approach of throwing technique training and strength training relevant to the throwing condition to improve throwing speed in elite male cricketers.
