Abstract
This study fills a niche in providing Rottnest ferry operators an insight into poor surface ocean conditions off the Perth coast which risk passenger safety and comfort. The results are based on 5 months of 1996 non-directional wave data collected by two Waverider buoys each located in separate wave fields, offshore and inshore. Wind data and ferry data spanning the same period were also used for the study.
Poor ferry conditions can be characterised by the significant wave heights and the significant wave periods. An analysis of combined wave height and period data shows an increase in wave steepness being associated with poor ferry operating conditions characterised by past ferry cancellations. An analysis of wave periods have also indicated that poor conditions exist with waves of moderate periods (- 6s). These results are supported by a previous study (Hercus et al. 1991 ). These conditions have been shown to be associated with the presence of strong winds from the west to north-west.
