Masters by Coursework, Murdoch University
2023
Abstract
This study analysed the key factors driving Vietnam’s electric two-wheeler (E2W) market and proposes strategies to foster its growth. Using a multifaceted research approach, combining expert interviews and comprehensive consumer surveys involving 385 respondents, this study elucidates the complexities surrounding E2W adoption, detailing prospective benefits and inherent challenges. The investigation adopts the relative importance index (RII) for data analysis, highlighting the paramount significance of reliable charging infrastructure, upfront purchase costs, and reduced emissions. In addition, it emphasises the societal appeal of E2Ws due to their contributions in terms of sustainable development and modern design, complemented by streamlined licensing policies and direct purchase incentives that facilitate adoption. Other primary considerations include technological aspects, such as safety, range, battery lifespan, and charging duration. In tandem, NVivo software was used to analyse primary data sourced from interviews with 15 experts. The findings highlight Vietnam’s unique urban traffic compatibility for E2Ws, underscored by dense urban roads, economic feasibility, and pressing environmental concerns. The study identifies factors influencing the decision to adopt E2Ws, encompassing consumer perceptions, economic considerations, environmental awareness, and governmental policies. However, this enthusiasm is tempered by barriers such as climate challenges, financial constraints and infrastructural limitations. While optimism surrounds the potential of E2Ws in Vietnam’s transportation system, their full-scale integration mandates addressing safety issues, public compliance and infrastructural development. The dissertation concludes with expert-endorsed approaches to foster E2W adoption, emphasising the need for awareness campaigns, clear policy directives, safety measures, and technological innovations. This research offers a comprehensive overview of Vietnam’s E2W landscape, providing valuable insights for policymakers, industry stakeholders and urban planners seeking to understand and promote the widespread adoption of E2Ws in Vietnam.
