Abstract
This project considers the role of microfinance in Vietnam for improving women’s empowerment. Although the targeting of microfinance projects and programs at women is a controversial approach across the world, its positive contributions to gender issues are not denied. Some critiques show that microfinance exacerbates women’s inferior status. However, the project explores that the design and operating mechanism of microfinance can play a very important role in empowering women. The operating mechanism of microfinance in Vietnam is complex and reliant on government support that constrains sustainable development in the long run as well as the enhancement of women’s empowerment. It is also argued to not have linkages between microfinance and women’s empowerment as well as clear operating methods to obtain gender equality. Moreover, the operating system of microfinance has not attracted the participation of a variety of sectors in society. Therefore, to improve women’s empowerment in Vietnam, it is necessary to redesign the operating modes of microfinance to attract more sectors’ participation in society and reduce the dependence on government.
