Abstract
This thesis explores contemporary literary representations of motherhood, drawing particular focus on the experiences and institutionalisation of mothers caring for young children. Across both creative and critical components, it argues and exemplifies that the short story cycle (SSC) offers a distinct space to represent the complex and multiple experiences of mothers. The complexity of these contemporary literary representations of early motherhood prompts responses in three critical and creative areas: the representation of multiple maternal perspectives, the experience and presentation of discontinuous temporality, and the overt privileging of the ordinary and mundane.
