Abstract
The teaching of the Stanislavsky system is currently dominated by a psychological approach, guiding students to replicate real-life behaviour based on personal emotional responses. However, Stanislavsky developed his system from a psychological-emotional approach to a method of physical actions based on spontaneous personal responses to generate authentic experiences. I argue that this psychophysical exploration, facilitated through ludic activities, can more effectively generate authentic responses and experiences than the psychological approach, and reflects the actual development of Stanislavsky’s own practice.
The thesis has two components: an exegesis and a manual. The exegesis examines how a psychophysical approach to teaching the Stanislavsky system integrates the body and psyche in the acting process. It explores how emotions cannot be isolated, but rather expressed through physical actions that are logically connected to the character’s situation and given circumstances. This method not only encourages student actors to engage with the dramatic elements of the play actively but also leads to a more personalised and authentic performance. Further, it proposes using playfulness and improvisation as distinctive tools to access authentic emotions during actor training.
The manual develops a unique pedagogical framework for teaching the Stanislavsky system, specifically designed for high school and undergraduate acting students. It underscores creating a dynamic and engaging learning environment that fosters a deep understanding of the system and enhances practical acting skills. The objective of this pedagogical approach is the concept of perezhivanie, which captures the psychophysical experience actors undergo during performance. The teaching manual prioritises emotional well-being and creative exploration and engages students in role-play and playful activities.
