Abstract

Inorganic polymers Bridges—Design and construction Building materials--Bhutan Construction industry--Bhutan
Bhutan, as a carbon-negative country, prioritizes sustainability in its infrastructure development. Geopolymer Concrete (GPC) presents an eco-friendly alternative to conventional Portland cement-based concrete, significantly reducing carbon emissions and improving durability. However, GPC has not yet been adopted in Bhutan’s bridge construction sector. This research aims to investigate the feasibility of introducing GPC by focusing on the availability of alumino-silicate precursors and alkali-activator chemicals in Bhutan and nearby region, India. A supply chain model using STAN or e-Sankey was developed to evaluate economic feasibility, and a techno-economic analysis with SuperPro Designe will compare GPC with conventional concrete. Additionally, laboratory trials were conducted to determine suitable mix designs for Bhutanese conditions. This research will contribute to policy recommendations and industry strategies for sustainable infrastructure development in Bhutan.
