Abstract

Disasters--Research Conflict--Research Social conflict--Research Natural disasters--Research Disasters--Political aspects Conflict management
Disasters have always posed significant challenges to societies, often by exacerbating pre-existing conflicts or impacting environments significantly, resulting in resource scarcities and grievances and creating new confrontations. However, with the increased impacts of climate change and the growing pressure of increasing populations within vulnerable urban centres, the intensity, frequency and human impact of disasters and potential intersection of conflict are more profound. Therefore, understanding the complexities within the relationship between a disaster event and the risks of various conflicts is essential in developing effective disaster management and addressing potential hazards. This study addresses our current understanding of how disasters and conflicts interact by evaluating the theoretical frameworks and empirical evidence presented within the literature. This review examines how disaster, conflict types, causal mechanisms, and contextual factors influence potential conflict risk after a disaster. Furthermore, this systematic review evaluates peer-reviewed journal articles published between 2000 and 2022 identified by Scopus, encompassing qualitative and quantitative studies addressing current research gaps and advancements and providing recommendations for future research.
