Abstract

This project reviews some of the commonly used Engineering Software Packages in Learning and Teaching of Process Systems and Process Control Engineering at Murdoch University. The software packages include Excel in Microsoft Office, MatLab, Simulink, LabVIEW, Simatic Step 7 (TIA Portal), and AspenONE. Different packages serve different purposes, but all are useful for automation. Microsoft Excel is one of the products under the Microsoft Office package. Murdoch University is subscribing to the latest Office 365, which featured Excel 2016. Siemens AG produces Simatic STEP 7, and it is for controlling Siemens controller. Among other STEP 7 families, the laboratory at Murdoch University uses S7-300. National Instruments developed LabVIEW and releases the latest version of LabVIEW this year, which is LabVIEW 2017 and LabVIEW NXG 1.0. Murdoch University is using LabVIEW 2016. AspenONE produced by Aspen Technology for simulation of chemical reactions. MathWorks provides MatLab and Simulink and integrates amongst each other. The project will investigate the software package one by one and will need about two to three weeks each. This project will give a recommendation of which features that they have not been used but could be useful for future teaching. This project will benefit the reader as lecturers can pick up the advice from this project to make teaching easier for them. As for students, they can check how they use the software.
