Abstract

The general literature has been slow to focus on the empirical validation of approaches to teacher occupational stress management. This investigation has outlined, compared and evaluated two teacher stress management techniques {collaborative consultation and relaxation training) using matched teacher groups. Analyses of perceived teacher stress levels posttreatment and at a follow-up assessment period, revealed a consistent effectiveness for the collaborative consultation approach when compared to a control group. Such an on-going effect was not found for the relaxation training approach, which appeared to provide only a minimal degree of assistance in the short term and gave inconclusive results at a follow-up assessment. Possible reasons for these results were speculated upon in terms of how each approach functions as a stress management technique. Suggestions were also made as to the possible directions that further research in this area might take.
