Abstract

In recent years, several prominent Asian leaders have sought to challenge liberal democracy by presenting another version of democracy which they term as 'Asian democracy'. The formulation of Asian democracy had generated an intense debate among many political leaders and political observers over what democracy means and cannot mean. This thesis attempts to problematise the concept of democracy and argue that democracy is always a product of discursive processes of negotiation, struggle and contestation. It engages in a critical analysis of the discourse of Asian democracy and specifically examines the ways in which it has come to be represented and articulated by the Singapore political elites. It illustrates how the discourse of Asian democracy may be strategically deployed by Asian political leaders (in particular, Singapore) for their specific political interests.
