The representation of the "Orient" in "Occidental" theatre

Abstract
The "Orient" and "Occident" are terms that are often used to simplify and classify the world by dividing it into two distinct areas, east and west. This argument problematises these terms and their relationship to theatre. The very definition of these terms is very perplexing and confusing, and an examination of the use of these terms in the interpretation and creation of theatre raises questions about cross-cultural representation, the extent to which theatre can be socially accountable, and how "othered" cultures are portrayed in the theatre. This argument explores the way that three prominent theatre practitioners; Artaud, Brook and Barba; have specifically used these terms in their theatre and their theories.
