Abstract
The research seeks to contribute to and enhance understanding of Lusaka City solid waste management. This dissertation was developed from data collected through secondary sources. It explores the current situation as well as future solid waste management options for Lusaka City.
From an examination of the extent and effectiveness of SWM in Lusaka City the study shows that MSW collection and disposal do not differ from the other developing countries facing similar problems of effectiveness and extensiveness. MSW collection is more effective in central city and some urban neighbourhoods.
The study identifies the weaknesses and opportunities in solid waste management. It concludes that there are weaknesses in governance, there are few personnel trained in waste management and there is no linkage existing between the government and the community in management of solid waste. Although the study finds that there is poor municipal coordination of solid waste management in Lusaka, there are opportunities that can be exploited to improve solid waste management and these opportunities are exploited further through human resources available and with government-industry partnership, and these are potential for waste recycling and re-use.
