A Mast Cell tumor in the tracheal lumen of a two year old thoroughbred gelding

Abstract
Background
An endoscopic examination was performed on a two-year-old Thoroughbred gelding as part of a pre-purchase examination. A 1.5 cm diameter, pedunculated mass was identified attached to the ventral tracheal lumen 5 cm caudal to the cricoid cartilage.
Treatment and diagnosis
The gelding was referred for treatment and the mass was surgically excised using a transendoscopic diode laser. Histological examination revealed the mass to be a mast cell tumor.
Outcome
An endoscopic examination performed one year post-operatively found no recurrence of the lesion.
Conclusion
This is a rare report of a mast cell tumor in the tracheal lumen of a horse. Transendoscopic laser excision appears to have been curative. Although rare, a mast cell tumor should be considered as a differential diagnosis for any abnormal growth identified in the equine tracheal lumen.
