Abstract

This paper was first presented at a conference called "Refiguring Postcoloniality Beyond Literature." We would like to thank Len Collard for the welcome he offered at the beginning of the seminar. We start by acknowledging, "nidja Nyungar boodjar noonook nyinniny, Nyungar boodier nidja boodjar." The seminar occurred in Nyungar boodjar or Nyungar country. Our view is that Nyungar are 'boodier' or legitimate custodians of this place. We believe it is also worth remembering that Nyungar have contributed much to cultural and economic life in the southwest and that Nyungar knowledge and systems have and continue to have much influence in this part of the world.
