Abstract

Patient’s aggression and violence towards nurses is a common phenomenon seen and expected for nurses working in mental health facilities. The aftermath effects were found to be associated with negative psychological and emotional responses and job dissatisfaction that can reciprocally leads to inadequate quality of care and a vicious cycle of patient’s aggression and violence towards nurses. A systematic literature review was done to identify the best evidence-based practice in managing the aftermath effects on nurses. Three interventions, 1) Formal crisis interventions including staff victim debriefing, counseling, and staff victim support group, 2) Informal peer support system, and 3) Staff training, are strongly recommended in the management of aftermath effect in nurses despite the paucity of empirical studies to support their efficacy.
