Abstract

Climate change Human usage Natural heritage Park management Parks Threats
This viewpoint considers threats to the natural heritage values of parks and protected areas. The first problem is the existential threat of climate change which has already damaged parks and UNESCO World Heritage areas. The second major threat is represented by various factors that include human-mediated habitat loss, the spread of exotics and institutional failures in planning and management. The third threat involves human use of parks and the effects of heavy visitation. All three threats often come together to amplify threats to the integrity of park values. I go on to forward the view that proactive policy makers and managers can make a stronger effort in response to climate change and can do more to facilitate management effectiveness by prioritising manageable problem areas. Moreover, by acknowledging the concerns of environmentally aware and concerned visitors, there is scope for mobilising positive public contribution in situations where there are funding shortfalls and deficiencies in park management.
