Journal of Applied Ichthyology, Vol.5(1), pp.28-34
1989
Abstract
There is a worldwide concern over the impact assessment and management of altered ecosystems. Increasingly, attention is being focussed on the role of invasive species in environmental degradation. A practical example of the use of theoretical concepts is presented with particular reference to the invasive species Barbus aeneus, Clarias gariepinus, Austroglanis sclateri and Labeo capensis of the Great Fish River, South Africa. The intrinsic species characteristics of age, growth and reproduction are presented. The status of the invasion by exotic species and the susceptibility of the environment are described.
