Abstract

Iron concentration in laboratory-maintained Mactra lilacea when exposed to sea water with a particle load of 1 kg m-3 of iron ore dust was found to increase rapidly due to the filtering activity of these bivalves. This temporary store of iron diminished as iron ore was eliminated as faeces and also when the animals were allowed to purge themselves in clean sea water.
