Balliella hirsuta sp. nov. (Ceramiaceae, Rhodophyta) from Rottnest Island, Western Australia

Abstract
A new species of the genus Balliella Hono & Tanaka is described from Rottnest Island, Western Australia. Balliella hirsuta sp. nov. is distinguished from the previously described members of the genus by the production of vesicular cells (gland cells) strictly adaxially on the basal cells of lateral branches, straight (as opposed to sinusoidal) axes, and the slight rotation of lateral branches. Inclusion of the new species in Balliella necessitates expanding the generic limits to admit plants without abaxial vesicular cells. As now defined, the distinctive features of the genus Balliella within the tribe Antithamnieae are its unusual spherical vesicular cells and corticated main axes.
