Abstract

Thi simportant book presents a collection of essays and ethnographic case studies on a subject of great importance to practitioners and theoreticians of environmental management. It addresses the issue of indigenous minorities' claims to land and resources in a non-Western context, and the difficulties of gaining recognition as stakeholders and legitimate claimants on their own cultural terms. Although focused on case studies from Malaysia and Indonesia, these explorations, by Zerner and his colleagues, of more appropriate ways for approaching the "question of rights", are relevant to everyone concerned to give cultural and social dimensions their proper place in environmental impact assessment and management.
