Abstract
This volume will find a ready and receptive market among those enrolled for undergraduate courses with the same title as the book. Courses on ‘Globalization and Governance’ are fashionable, and Jon Pierre provides a lucid introduction of how states have grappled with the challenges of globalization upon the architecture of three OECD states. A particular strength is in the organization of the book: rather than three country chapters on Japan, Sweden and the USA straddling the middle of the book, three big thematic questions provide the back- bone to his empirical cases. While the thematic chapter on economic governance is familiar territory for political economists, the following chapters on first, cities, regions and the greatly over-looked role of local government, and thereafter the chapter on administrative reform, offer considerable analytical insight on national and local government responses to globalization. Nevertheless, a more accurate title for the volume would have been Domestic Governance and Globalization where the emphasis is on the former and ‘globalization’ is defined in a limited manner as an economic and technological set of forces assumed to be propelling convergence among states.
