Abstract

Takahashi Korekiyo (1854–1936) led an extraordinary life. Chiefly known to historians of modern Japan as the highly unorthodox Finance Minister who implemented deficit financing to combat the depression of the early 1930s, then was assassinated by right-wing militarists in the attempted coup d'etat of February 1936, he did enough just in the last six or seven years of his long life to be classified as an important historical figure. Richard Smethurst makes clear, however, in this first English-language account of Takahashi's life and thought, that Takahashi deserves attention for many other reasons as well. In doing so, Smethurst provides new perspectives on key moments in the modern history of Japan, and at the same time gives us an engaging account of the life of a remarkable individual.
