Abstract
Symbols of Australia offers the reader an introduction by the editors, Melissa Harper and Richard White, and twenty-six essays by various hands reflecting on the symbols that one way or another have been accepted as connoting Australia in the eyes of the Australian people and the world at large. They range from natural features such as the Southern Cross and the kangaroo to the unashamedly commercial such as Vegemite and the FJ Holden. It is a difficult anthology to review. On the one hand the essays provide an enjoyable read and offer fresh in- sights into aspects of Australian society that one has been inclined to take for granted. On the other hand there is inevitably room for disagreement. Let us dispose of criticisms first.
