Abstract

As Thomas Burkman observes, orthodox accounts of Japan's foreign relations in the interwar period generally mention the League of Nations only at two critical points. The first is at the Versailles Conference in 1919, which set up the League but denied Japan's request to insert a racial equality clause in the League's Covenant; the second is in 1933, when the Japanese delegation walked out of the League of Nations in protest at its endorsement of the Lytton Report, which was critical of Japan's actions in Manchuria in 1931–32...
