Abstract

Acute phase proteins (APP) have been investigated in people and dogs affected by various neoplasias. High concentrations of C-reactive protein (CRP), haptoglobin and a1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) have been observed in dogs with various neoplasms, including lymphoma. While a possible prognostic role of APPs has been hypothesized for many human tumors (especially diffuse large B-cell lymphoma; DLBCL), the same has not been confirmed in dogs, where information about differences among immunophenotypes and stages is not available yet. The aim of this study was to assess the APP profile in dogs with B- or T-cell lymphoma at advanced clinical stages (IV and V) and any substage at initial presentation. Positive APP (CRP and AGP) and the negative APP Paraoxonase- 1 (PON-1) were measured in 23 dogs with B-cell lymphoma (13 DLBCL, 10 marginal zone lymphoma) and 8 dogs with peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL). A total of 14/ 31 dogs had stage IV disease (11 IVa; 3 IVb), while 17/31 had stage V disease (9 Va; 8 Vb). No significant differences in CRP, APP and PON-1 concentrations were observed among dogs with B-cell or T-cell lymphoma. PON-1 was significantly lower in dogs with stage V disease, and CRP was higher in Vb. When considering substages, CRP was significantly higher in substage b than in substage a, whereas AGP and PON-1 increased and decreased, respectively, with P-values approaching the level of statistical significance. In conclusion CRP, PON-1 and AGP may be useful markers for the assessment of tumor activity in dogs with advanced stage lymphoma at initial presentation.
