Abstract
Two knifejaw species, Oplegnathus robinsoni and O. conwayi, which occur on subtidal reefs along the South African coast are harvested exclusively by spearfishermen. Calculations from spearfishing licence returns indicate that up to 4 tonnes of knifejaws may be harvested annually in Natal. Length-weight relationships were established for each species and examination of otoliths revealed that knifejaws attained ages in excess of ten years. Reproductive activity was found throughout the year and stomach contents analyses showed that both species were benthic omnivores. Confusion with regard to the taxonomy of a third species O. peaolopesi is discussed and the present management strategy for knifejaws in South African waters is considered.
