Abstract

1. 1. Mainly due to much smaller concentrations of iron in the nephric fold, the concentrations of non-haem iron in the whole body of the larvae of Lampetra planeri and Petromyzon marinus (Petromyzontidae) and of Mordacia mordax (Mordaciidae) are far lower than in larval Geotria australis (Geotriidae). 2. 2. Differences in the proportion of non-haem iron present as haemosiderin in the whole body, nephric fold and, to a certain extent, the liver of the larvae of different lamprey species are related to differences in the total amount of non-haem iron. 3. 3. The plasma non-haem iron concentration in ammocoetes from all three lamprey families is high (≫ 9450 μ g/100 ml), suggesting that enzymes responsible for haem synthesis in larval lampreys are relatively inefficient.
