Contribution of community knowledge of vertebrate fauna to management and planning
Ecological management & restoration, Vol.1(3), pp.175-184
2000
Abstract
A community survey of fauna on the Iluka Peninsula on the north coast of New South Wales demonstrated that vertebrate fauna does exist on private property, that there is valuable local knowledge of particular areas and particular species, and that there is community concern over declining fauna. The survey also found that there is support for planning habitat management action and detailed long-term fauna research. By combining research on community knowledge and aspirations with a fauna survey, this study offers an effective approach to applying some of the technical aspects of conserving biodiversity within a planning framework.
